Puppy Mill Bill Update
House Bill 223, Senate Bill 173
Update: Dec 11, 2008 Many
people have responded with questions asking which legislators
were opposed to giving the Puppy Mill Bill a vote. When
discussed in the Republican Caucus (House
Leadership) the only supporting member was Rep
Michelle Schneider, along with Rep Shawn Webster.
That meeting, along with
The State
Government Committee, chaired by Rep Dave
Daniels failed to give The Puppy Mill Bill a vote, even after
agreeing to do so if changes were made to the language.
Update: Dec 10, 2008
Unfortunately, we will not see the
Puppy Mill bill
pass in 2008.
We faced opposition in committee that would not allow the bill
to proceed. The bill was still in consideration until Dec 9,
2008.
Several legislators commented they have never seen this volume
of support to pass a bill. With a super majority in the Senate
and close to that in the House, undoubtedly, we had the votes to
pass the bill. Sadly, a few legislators in key positions had
the ability to hold the bill back. Thank you for your unwavering
support to help the dogs languishing in
puppy mills
in Ohio. We will be back at it, stronger than ever in 2009.
Update: Dec 2, 2008 We have been in constant contact with
Chairman Daniels office in rewriting language in the bill to
appease all concerned. At this time, we are on version 13
of the language and hope our dogged effort will be met with an
opportunity to be voted on in the house committee.
